I’ve been prescribed NSAIDs for my recurring back pain, but I also have a mild heart condition (arrhythmia, to be exact). I’ve been trying to read up on whether NSAIDs are actually safe for people like me, but every source seems to say something slightly different. Some say short-term use is fine, others say it's risky even in low doses. Has anyone here had a similar experience or gotten advice from a cardiologist?

Hi Mark, that’s a really valid concern — and you’re not alone in this. I’m a nurse, and I’ve seen this question come up a lot, especially with older patients. NSAIDs like ibuprofen or diclofenac can raise blood pressure and, in some cases, increase the risk of heart issues, especially if used long-term. That doesn’t mean they’re completely off-limits, but it really depends on your heart’s current status, other medications you're on, and even your kidney function. Some cardiologists suggest using NSAIDs only when absolutely necessary and in the lowest possible dose for the shortest time. For a good breakdown of how different NSAIDs work and their risks (including cardiovascular), I’d recommend checking this out: dna meaning It helped one of my patients understand the trade-offs better and make a plan with her doctor. And if you're using them regularly, even OTC, bring it up at your next appointment — a lot of people don’t realize how much it can matter in the long term.
